Carl Patrick Thompson Sr., 79, of Cairo, Illinois passed away Saturday December 7, 2024 at the Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis, Illinois. He was born to James Thompson and Florence Thompson in America, Illinois on February 17, 1945.
He graduated from Lovejoy High School, and shortly after entered active duty as a member of the United States Air Force. Following his honorable discharge in 1968, Carl became a mental health technician at Shapiro Developmental Center in Kankakee, Illinois. In this role, he supervised staff and provided support in all aspects of daily living for adults with intellectual disabilities, behavioral problems, and significant medical issues.
Carl was also a small business owner during his time in Kankakee, owning and operating Thompson Groceries alongside his brother Robert. The business became a local institution in the 80's and 90's, with many sharing fond memories of the store's coin operated video games, selection of candy and snacks, and unique local
